Are you running Mac OS 9?
First, check to make sure you aren't running Netscape 4.0 (or less) with MacOS. If you are, trying running Internet Explorer instead (or switching to a different operating system, like Linux or OS X).
What version browser do you have?
Second, check to make sure you are running at least version 5.0 of your browser (Netscape / IE). You can do this by clicking on the "Help" menu and clicking "About".
Is your browser set to run Java?
If you've satisfied everything so far, then you probably don't have your browser configured to run Java.
If you are running Netscape, click the menu item "Edit", then "Preferences". A screen will be displayed with different catagories. Click on "Advanced". You want to make sure the "Enable Java" box is checked.
If you are running Internet Explorer, click on "Tools", then "Internet Options...". Click on the "Security" tab. Click on the button "Custom Level...". Scroll down the list of security settings until you find "Java: Java permissions". Make sure that java is not disabled, and that the security is not too high (I don't think it has to be very low to work).
If you are running Safari, in the Safari menu choose Preferences , go to the Security tab and make sure the that Enable Java box is checked.
Latest versions of Opera and Firefox now do not include Java by default. You'll need to install it (see next section).
Does your browser support java 1.3?
IE 6.0 on Windows XP now comes without Java support (yikes!) or with outdated java support (java 1.1). The reason for this is described here, and also here. To fix this, you'll need to install the browser plugin from this page on Sun's website. Scroll down to the table labeled "Download J2SE v 1.4.2_01" and click on the "Download" link for the JRE for your operating system. I promise that if nothing else worked, this will.
Still doesn't Work?!?
Well, I haven't encountered this yet, so my best advice would be to find someone who likes to figure out computer things, and harass them until it works. Or you could give up (never give up!). I would also be interested in what didn't work if you have the time to email me about the problem.
Best of luck!
